Born in Lusaka, raised in Wales, self-taught. I Am Not a Witch premiered at Cannes and took two British Independent Film Awards; On Becoming a Guinea Fowl took Best Director at Cannes in 2024.
Rungano Nyoni is a Zambian-Welsh director and screenwriter, born in Lusaka and taken to Wales at nine. She took an MA in acting at Central Saint Martins and taught herself to make films.
Her first feature, I Am Not a Witch (2017), about Zambia's witch camps, premiered in Directors' Fortnight at Cannes and won her Best Director and Best Debut Director at the 20th British Independent Film Awards. Her second, On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, won Best Director in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2024.
