A policeman, railwayman and street sweeper who became Lusaka's governor and then spent a decade losing elections before winning in 2011, taking Zambia through its second transfer of power between parties. He died in office in 2014.
Michael Chilufya Sata worked as a police officer, a railway hand and — during a spell in London — a station sweeper, before rising through Zambian local government to run Lusaka.
He broke with the MMD, founded the Patriotic Front, and stood for the presidency in 2006, 2008 and 2011, winning on the fourth attempt against the incumbent Rupiah Banda, who conceded. His campaigns were built on the conditions of the urban poor and on the treatment of Zambian workers in foreign-owned mines, and he was called King Cobra for the speed of his tongue. In office he raised the minimum wage sharply and put money into rural roads and district hospitals. He died in office in October 2014.
