Paul Ngozi

1949 – 1989

Zamrock pioneer and bandleader of the Ngozi Family

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Zambia Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

One of the first musicians whose sound was called Zamrock. Thirty-five years after his death Tyler, the Creator sampled him, and there is a street in Kabwata with his name on it.

Paul Ngozi, born Paul Dobson Nyirongo in 1949, was a Zambian musician and a leading figure in the music of the 1970s and 1980s.

He led the Ngozi Family, among the first groups whose music was classified as Zamrock, and worked across kalindula, garage rock and proto-punk. His albums include 45,000 Volts (1977), Heavy = Metal (1977) and Size 9 (1981). He was a sharp social commentator, and a street in Kabwata, Lusaka, is named after him. He died in 1989.
