Painter, printmaker and sculptor, and the first Zambian artist the wider world took seriously. Two years after his death, seventy Zambian artists founded a national council in his name.
Henry Nkole Tayali was born on 22 November 1943 and became a painter, sculptor, printmaker and lecturer, and the Zambian artist most widely recognised internationally.
He took a fine art degree at Makerere in Uganda and a master's at the Düsseldorf art academy in West Germany, and as University Artist at the University of Zambia campaigned to have a school of fine arts established in the country, running workshops and seminars throughout. He died on 22 July 1987. In 1989 more than seventy Zambian artists founded the Zambia National Visual Arts Council in his honour; its home at the Lusaka Showgrounds, the Henry Tayali Visual Art Centre, opened in 1995 and remains the centre of Zambian contemporary art.
